Review: Porsche 911 GT2 RS the race car for the road

HAVE you ever wondered what type of car Formula One drivers have as a weekend toy? Here’s a prime example. Aussie ace Mark Webber and other speed demons have one of these stashed in their garages because it’s one of the few road cars with enough power to give them a fright. Officially, it’s called the GT2 RS and under the familiar shape of a Porsche 911 it packs the performance to match or eclipse hyper-cars. Unofficially, those in the know call [...]

2018 Audi TT range review

What is it? Audi’s compact sports car is an integral part of its range, bridging the gap between its high-volume models and high-end R8 supercar. It gives buyers a chance to look good and feel sporty without spending really big bucks. How many models can I choose from? There are three main versions of the car – the regular TT, sportier TTS and sportiest TT RS – with coupe and cabriolet versions of each. The base-level TT is powered by the same 169kW/370Nm [...]

MOTORSPORT: Mercedes ecstasy, Ferrari, Ricciardo agony

Hamilton wins from 14th on the grid as Vettel blows it on his home ground and misfortune strikes our man Ricciardo again. What a difference a day makes in Formula 1. Sometimes. Lewis Hamilton was a shattered man after a hydraulics failure left him only 14th in qualifying for the German Grand Prix. A day later he was a miraculous winner at Hockenheim and Mercedes scored a one-two, with Valtteri Bottas obeying team orders to stay behind the world champion. Sebastian Vettel’s [...]

MOTORSPORT: LEGO could be coming to Supercars

The iconic Danish toy-maker has been approached by the Tekno team, which currently fields rookie racer Jack Le Brocq in a Holden Commodore, to run its iconic colours in the touring car championship. The top-secret plan blew apart when Supercars Television inadvertently leaked a hint during its Townsville telecast. Its graphic of the starting grid for race 18 of the Supercars championship showed the Tekno car in 19th place as expected, but carrying unexpected Lego colours. “They went too soon,” a Supercars [...]

MOTORSPORT: Changes ahead for Australian GT scene

New Aston Martin Vantages set for Bathurst 12-Hour and endurance doors open for Lowndes It’s been a week of positive developments for GT racing in Australia. Performance and Driving Impressions

Despite its many available powertrains and trim iterations, the Optima is a capable, polished automobile that stands up reasonably well to spirited driving. It’s simply not on the same level as the best in this class, though. What’s New for 2018? The Optima is mechanically unchanged for 2018, so its performance and driving character are unaffected. Those who prefer a sportier personality should see the new-for-2018 Kia Stinger. 2017 Kia Optima Acceleration Every Optima we’ve tested has delivered acceptable zero-to-60-mph acceleration times, but none have [...]

Sales figures prove Australians love performance cars

Breaking down the data that proves Aussies love a fast set of wheels It should be no surprise that Australians love performance cars. For a country that only had two ‘properly Aussie’ cars (sorry, Camry), it might have seemed excessive to some that we also had a separate company for each that would make them faster. But even excluding HSV and FPV, Australians still seek out the faster version of their intended car more regularly than the average buyer. MOTOR has gathered sales information and spoken to a few [...]

Faster than an F1: VW electric car to climb sport’s Everest

VOLKSWAGEN has built a race car to take the image of electric-powered performance to new heights … 4302 metres, to be precise. This is the finish-line altitude of the legendary Pikes Peak hillclimb. The purpose-designed, single-seat I.D. R Pikes Peak will compete in the annual 20km dash to the summit of the Colorado mountain. VW Motorsport says its aim is to beat the Pikes Peak electric vehicle record of 8 minutes 57.118 seconds, set in 2016. There’s a chance the battery-powered racer [...]

Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid 2018 boasts huge power but super low emissions

Porsche has pulled the wraps of the new Cayenne E-Hybrid 2018. Powering the SUV is an three-litre V6 engine combined with an electric engine. Together the powertrain produces 340kW/462 bhp – 250 kW/340 hp from the V6 and 100 kW/136 hp from the electric motor. This is a performance improvement of over 43 per cent for the electric engine and a boost of 7hp for the petrol engine. Due to the combination of the two engines, the car only emits 78g/km of CO2 [...]
